During the procedure a “sclerosing solution” is injected into the vein using ultrasound scanning (ultrasound guidance) to visualize the problem vein. The medication injected into the vein, scuffs the inside wall of the vein so that when a pressure stocking is applied the scuffed surfaces fuse together, sealing the varicose vein. Patients will notice a relief in symptoms and the vein will slowly shrink away and no longer be noticeable.
Although each session may involve a number of injections, the needle used is very fine so that pain is minimal. More than one vein may be treated during the same session. If any vein is incompletely treated, further injections may be needed in subsequent sessions.
Pressure is applied to the treated vessels using support stockings. These are usually worn for between seven days and two weeks following each treatment. Patients are able to return to normal activities immediately after sclerotherapy.
Walking is recommended for at least 45 minutes a day, for 2 weeks following the procedure. High impact exercise and weight training are not advised during this time.
